When you tell someone you are vegan one of the first questions you are bound to be asked is 'where do you get your protein?' The fact is there are plenty of ways to get vegan protein and there is really no need to worry. With a bit of thought you will get all the protein your body needs on a vegan diet without the need for supplements!

The fact is in the western world we often get to much protein and many people are over weight, vegans have a lower rate of obesity but also get all the vegan protein they need to be healthy.

Vegan sources of protein

Vegan protein can be found in many foods from wholemeal bread to nuts and seeds. Soya is another excellent source of vegan protein and it can even help you reduce your cholesterol level.

Do I need a vegan protein supplements?

No. If you are the sort of person that likes taking supplements then sure, go for it. But if the question is do you need vegan protein supplements to be a healthy vegan? Then the answer is categorically no. You will be totally fine without animal protein!

In the past animal tests misled scientists into the misguided impression that vegan protein was lesser than animal protein. Nowadays we know that plant protein is fine for human beings and that vegan protein is something you can get from a balanced vegan diet without supplements.

Can children get enough vegan protein?

Yes, children on a balanced vegan diet do fine. Your kids can get enough vegan protein without any supplements and as long as they eat well it is a totally great way for them to live. If your child has decided to go vegan then be assured with a bit of planning they are safe and fine.

Children going vegan is a great thing at this time of childhood obesity in the west and it is not something to be discouraged. Help your child to eat healthily and help them to choose foods that allow them to get the best out of a vegan diet.

What do the experts say?

The American Dietetic Association position paper on Vegetarian Diets is a good starting point for those who want to know what the expert opinion is about vegan diets. In summery you are totally fine on a well planned vegan diet. But if you are concerned please read it through so you get to know what you will need to watch and what benefits you should expect.

These days we know people can live totally well without the need for animal protein it is safe and not hard to do.
